Credit Card Merchant Accounts: Get those lower discounts you deserve
To cut down on fraud, Visa and Mastercard are regulating all mail order and non-swipe credit card merchant accounts to install AVS (Address Verification System). In return for the merchant installing the system, Visa/MC offer lower discount rates.
The system requires credit card merchant accounts who sell via mail or on-line to supply the street address and the zip code of the buyer. Visa/MC compares the street and zip against their files and returns a code to the merchant saying that it either does or does not match. It is up to the merchant whether to accept or deny the transaction. Visa/MC does not automatically deny the transaction.
Two systems that are very popular are IC Verify and PC Authorize. Credit card merchant accounts not using these types of address verification software are subject to much higher discount rates.
