How the banks look at merchant accounts
Where do you go to set up merchant accounts? The place to start is your local bank if you already have a business account set up there. When reviewing your options and comparing features to set up merchant accounts, banks are viewed as the most reliable and secure, but they are also the most selective. It is preferable to have at least a two-year history with the bank and high-risk businesses may be turned down.
Merchant accounts are set up for two different functions even though the purpose of both is to accept credit card payments. One way to use merchant accounts are for the business with a visible storefront doing sales of consumer goods. The other method is the business that does cyber sales over the Internet and ships out products or services. The bank looks at both businesses very differently and many banks do not offer Internet merchant accounts. Some banks consider e-commerce businesses to be high risk so may charge more if they agree to service you.
Plan ahead if you areng merchant accounts to run an Internet business. Keep in mind it takes several weeks to get the software, equipment and third-party processor in place. Banks also frown heavily on chargebacks and may shut down merchant accounts without working with the vendor to reduce the risks.
