Fixing credit report errors when they occur
If you’ve thoroughly reviewed your credit history and found errors on your credit you need to take the next steps to fixing credit report errors. Although there are standard procedures to fixing credit report errors, the process can take time.
If you believe an error was made by a company you’ve done business with, you can take the following steps in fixing credit report errors; Contact the company directly, asking that a written statement of the error be sent to all the credit bureaus; make sure you follow up with the credit bureaus to guarantee the changes have been made; make photocopies of any documents that support your claim; write a letter to the credit bureaus listing the mistake, stating what is wrong, and include your full name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number.
If you disagree with the credit bureau’s findings, you may insert a statement in your credit report without charge. Fixing credit report errors includes issuing the statement every time the report is sent out. Send the letter by certified mail and keep the receipt and a copy of your letter.
Remember your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and assume that the matter of fixing credit report errors should be handled within thirty days.
