Scam artists are preying on online retailers by buying goods with phony credit card numbers.
Phony credit card numbers are usually obtained in one of two ways, say an industry source. "One way is to use a credit card number generator. Go to Lycos or your favorite search engine, type in ‘credit card generator’ and it will show you a sly little program you can download for free that will spit out fraudulent numbers.
CyberSource offers an artificial intelligence-based fraud screen technology where the vendor provides transaction information over a secure line. The software looks for fraudulent characteristics, then returns a score that rates the likelihood that the purchase is legitimate. Based on that information, the merchant can accept or reject the sale. “We’ll check the time of transaction -- 2 a.m. has a higher risk associated with it than noontime,” says CyberSource personnel. “We look at where the transaction originates from a geographic standpoint relative to the cardholder’s billing address. If someone is dialing in from Miami and the billing address is Seattle, that’s unusual.”
There’s hope on the horizon in the form of several technologies designed to turn Internet transactions into the equivalent of face-to-face transactions. A new security system championed by IBM and others is one as well as one promoted by Netscape, while banks and credit card companies such as Bank of America and Visa are promoting smart cards to combat the credit card number generator.
