Why does the credit card rate vary so much?
Shopping for the best credit card rate to meet your needs is like shopping for a car. Credit cards rates come in all colors, models and features. You will see lots of tempting ads offering low interest, fixed rates, low introductory rates, 0 interest rates, cheap rates, and high approval. How in the world do you decipher this information? Time for a test drive!
Don’t be discouraged… with a little self education you can get the best credit card rate to meets your needs. Don’t get pressured into the “apply now before a certain date”, as there are more offers than you can imagine and it is important to know what you are getting yourself into.
As well as a good credit card rate there are other factors to consider. The Annual Percentage rate (APR) is the yearly rate you are charged on your unpaid balance. Often the APR is really low for the first 6 months to get you to sign up, and then it can increase often up to 30%. This can drastically affect the amount to pay if you carry a balance. If you pay your balance off monthly, get a low annual fee. If you carry a balance, get a low APR.
Other fees that affect your credit card rate include the annual fee ranging from $25.00 - $100.00 per year. Cash advances; transferring balances from other cards and late payment fees on overdue accounts are other hidden fees. One of the best ways to get a lower credit card rate is to simply phone the company and ask for one.
